Health Section

Health Departments is one of the seven thematic areas within Nile Hope which mainly focuses on three main areas

  • Health Promotion,
  • Disease prevention and
  • Cure, care and support of health ailments.

Nile Hope Health department is well versed with implementation of both development and emergency responses. We are HRP members responding to health needs in different parts of South Sudan.

  • Essential Health Care delivery

Courtesy of a support from UNICEF/World Bank under the MoH Nile Hope is supporting two counties within Lot-7 and Lot-8 Uror and Akobo Counties respectively.

Under this project a total of eleven facilities supported (Five facilities in Lot7 and six facilities and in Lot 8) the project is providing essential health services both at facility and community level through the famous BHI especially in Akobo County /Lot-8/.

To this effect Nile Hope is playing key role of ensuring access and availability of essential health services delivery in the supported counties: –

Health work Force

  • Support the County Health Department to ensuring a qualified health personnel are recruited and deployed to all the health facilities,
  • Health workers are equipped with up-to-date health information on treatment algorisms, guidelines and are refreshed with treatment, prevention and other health related knowledge through continued health training,
  • In Yuai PHCC, Nile Hope had recruited a medical associate/ surgeon/ to ensure a referral a capacity to ensure provision of emergency surgical services that includes surgical treatment of acute injuries, appendectomy, cesarian section, surgical excision of benign growth and related anomalies.

Health Management Information Systems

  • Equip health facilities with essential reporting and recording booklets and register books used for IDSR, Adults and Underfive register books, EPI, Maternal register books etc.
  • Support CHD/MoH team to ensure weekly/IDSR and monthly reports are timely collected from every facility and upload in to DHIS,
  • Follow up with the data quality and consistency across the facility to the county and verify for data plausibility.
  • Analyze collected data and identify disease occurrence and possible outbreaks or increase in morbidity or mortality in the county and give informed decision to identified health related events,

Leadership in Health

  • Work closely with the national Ministry of Health and County Health department to ensure close joint planning, implementation and follow-up of progress in implementation and address identified challenges,
  • Conduct a periodic CHD/Nile Hope integrated supportive supervision to health facilities to ensure quality health care is delivered, reports are well documented and reports are timely collected and shared with the county and the national MoH,
  • Backup the CHD in planning organizing and conducting coordination activities supervising implementation of with stake holders operating in Health and Nutrition activities in respective counties,

Drugs Supply Management System

  • A proper well ventilated storage structure is set in the county health quarters such as Walgak, Akobo in Lot-8 and in Puluchol and Yuai in Lot-7 or Uror counties,
  • Essential drug is timely distributed to health facilities per the request provided by the health facility in-charge and approved by the county Health Department (no stock outs) to all the supported Health facilities through the Last mile delivery,
  • Monthly drug stock check is conducted and a report is compiled and shared with relevant stake holders including the CHD and UNICEF
  • Ensure proper storage and distribution of drugs to beneficiaries at all facilities,

Health infrastructure: –

  • Ensuring a working health infrastructure where Nile Hope had managed to rehabilitate Four health facilities and constructed five PHCUs,
  • All PHCUs and PHCCs are equipped with WASH infrastructure that includes hand washing structures, sanitizers and an infrared thermometer is provided to ensure disease prevention is secured such as communicable disease and COVID.

Through the support across the different Health Systems Strengthening building blocks Nile Hope is able to ensure a continuum of care through a strong referral linkage between the community-based health service providers (BHWs) and health facilities and PHCU and PHCCs through enhanced communication channel and means of mobility such as providing Ambulance and boats in Akobo County.

Provision of essential health services that includes consultation, diagnosis and treatment of health aliments, provision of preventive health services such as vaccination of children and mothers, provision of vitamin A and LLINs to selected community and ensuring a strong referral linkage and continuum of care.

  • Emergency Health Care delivery

Nile Hope started its emergency response operation in 2005 courtesy of a support from UNICEF in Kier and Wanding areas of Nasir County. Since 2006 Nile Hope continued to be a member of the health cluster and an active member of the emergency health response team where it developed a great deal of capacity in responding to emergency in health.

Currently Nile Hope is an HRP member where it continued to respond to emergency health needs in South Sudan, as of 2013-2019 Nile Hope provided emergency health services in Akobo, Fangak, Uror, Pigi counties to identified health needs. Nile Hope has ample experience in providing emergency health care through mobile team to selected hard to reach areas as in Padoi, Wechjol in Akobo County and strengthening the existing PHCC through gap filling to enable boost the response capacity of the PHCC in the affected localities.
